Mert's Heart of Soul is a soul food resturant two blocks up Church Street from City Center. I visit Mert's every time that I go to Charlotte with a preference for breakfast.
I don't recommend the salmon cakes (I found them dry and tasteless), but the catfish or whiting with cheesy grits and eggs with a biscuit is the bomb!
As I said, I prefer breakfast at Mert's and I avoid lunch time hours during the week because the resturant is packed. The decour is upbeet and eclectic and the staff is easy going and friendly.
